For site owners
Your host is gone. Your site doesn't have to be.
If the pages were archived, most of what visitors saw can come back, at the same addresses.
—
What comes back
- Pages
- Text
- Images
- Styles
- The same URLs
—
What doesn't
- Databases
- Logins
- Carts
- Forms
- Anything never archived
01
First, check what actually expired
The domain
The name stopped resolving. Renew it first, or someone else can buy it.
The hosting
The name still works, but the files are gone. A restore replaces the files.
Both
Renew the domain today, then restore the files. Order matters.
02
What to do in the next hour
- 01Don't let the domain lapse. Renew it, even if the site is down.
- 02Ask your old host for any backup. Even a partial one helps.
- 03Note your most important URLs: the pages that got visits or links.
- 04Run a recovery.
03
Pick the right point in time
Choose a date before the site broke or was hacked. The restore takes each page as it was at or before that date, so a date after the damage brings the damage back too.
04
Keeping your rankings
- Keep the same URLs. Search engines and other sites already point at them.
- Add redirects for pages that moved.
- Restore the pages that had links first.
05
Then keep it running
A restore brings the pages back. Unpushed looks after them from then on.
